ummmm... "Love"?
ex: "I love you, therefore I cannot feel genuinely happy knowing you are upset over this"

... maybe I'm over-simplifying it

Did Imaginary Illusionary put forward Kahplah as a suggestion?

I like it too. It sort of eludes to the double nature of the beast. If I'm honest there is an underlying resentment that we're both feeling bad because of someone else, someone who is supposed to be making him feel better (OK not in reality but you get the idea). I can relate to feeling Kahplah. It is indeed a Kahplah kind of a feeling!!
