It happened. Feeling numb

Hi Cuppycake,

Sorry this has happened to you; definitely be a lioness in protecting your children and their future. Talk to a lawyer and find out what all your options are. Do whatever you have to do to get child support payments started as soon as possible. Only work with him if you can do so without him using it against you later.

You are carrying many weights on your shoulders right now. It's probably lucky that you're in a state of numbness, but the pain is bound to come to the surface sooner or later. Do what you need to do to take care of you, as well as the kids.

Much sympathies,
Kevin T.

Protect yourself and withdraw whatever money you have and put it into a new account at a different bank that he cannot access. You need to be able to support yourself. Then go to the OPM's website and start reading about your rights when divorcing a government employee.

Be careful doing this. During the divorce process, withdrawing joint funds can be looked upon by the courts very poorly, and if you live in a Community Property state, this won't do any good anyway.

If you're a redditor, I recommend the subreddit r/legaladvice. Definitely protect yourself, but do so in a way that doesn't prejudice the court against you. Get a lawyer who specializes in family law if you need to.
