This might seem a little odd but

Ok, let me say something about myself right quick. When I sign up for a forum, I have a bit of a tendency to post topics that are on touchy or unusual topics. Usually this is something I am thinking about at the time or an issue that is currently bothering me.

This is the later, and I'm embarrassed to say it's about porn.... yea.

First off let me say that I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Now the thing I wanted to talk about was the issue people commonly have with pornography in general. Often times when I think about it, I worry less about porn itself and more about the industry and how the people, particularly the women are treated.

I ran across several youtube videos such as these here

[edited by Moderator: Please note the below links do not take you to porn videos, but to documentary shorts and news broadcasts about events in the porn industry]

These often lead into another debate about prostitution as well, which makes one wonder if the very concept itself as a whole is bad.

I'm not about to state my views on the matter but I would like to know what all of you think of porn and prostitution both as actions and the industries.

I apologies ahead of time, to bring up such a potentially uncomfortable topic here, which I'm not sure is allowed or not. I'm sure it might be setting a bad image for me since I'm so new here and haven't said or done much here.

Another thing is I know religion and spirituality often gets poured into this debate, so I think it would be best for everyone to try to respect one another in this issue if possible.

Last of all I don't want this to be a topic to become a discussion about favorite porn videos and the like. Just a deep yet respectful discussion on the issue at hand.

I prefer amature porn because its generally made by people wanting to make it who are having sex with their partner.
I enjoy porn to a degree. But i do think the industry mistreats employees and I dont bother watching "professional" porn because its not realistic.
If i want to watch sex, i want to watch real sex between real people who are really enjoying themselves.

That's how i feel about it. I don't watch often but when I do its the amature stuff. I also like real looking people. Fake boobs and shaved bodies grosses me out

The "breaking the fourth wall" to ridiculous extremes totally turns me off to the produced stuff... just, ew. Go focus on what you're doing, ok? And what's with all the jedi tongue fights?

Well, I like mostly nude modeling and soft core stuff. Wife likes that and some harder stuff, Wifey prefers anime porn.

As long as they're treated well, don't have a problem with the industry in general.

I don't think at their core that porn and prostitution are problematic or exploitative, but the way the laws and industries work at the moment have generally resulted in exploitation and some unhealthy standards.

Why would you want us to state our views on the matter, though, while being unwilling to do so with yours?

Fair enough.

I don't really have a problem with the act of pornography in itself nor do I believe in shaming those who participate in it whether they wanted to or not.

However I'm not a fan of the industries practices, and I have heard some stories about how people are treated there and the long term affects of the practice. This is what worries me to a great extent. It shouldn't be this way.

I would agree with most of those statements, although I really don't know of any way to change it other than education about the ills it can cause (lots of sexual dysfunction in young males who become addicted to it or cannot enjoy sex because it isn't the same as the porn) and by generally avoiding consuming it ourselves (either by not watching or by sticking to amateur things).

Re (from OP):
"I would like to know what all of you think of porn and prostitution both as actions and the industries."

In theory I don't object to either profession: provided they're conducted in an atmosphere of total all-around consent.

In practice I don't think the legal statutes are adequate for the women's needs. (Of course there are male prostitutes and male porn actors, and I certainly care about their welfare too.) If the Law recognized porn acting and prostitution as valid legal career choices, and at the same time required humane working conditions using specific language and backing it up with police support, we'd have made a good start on getting those industries where they should be.

I recently saw a documentary called "American Courtesans" (2013); it was a montage of interview segments (by and) with various women who were or had been prostitutes. It's a good show and I recommend it. I was particularly struck by two key impressions from it:

  • Most of the prostitutes had a positive attitude about the work itself.
  • Most of the prostitutes had been through awful, life-threatening situations, and couldn't turn to the Law for help.
So from that documentary, one would tend to conclude that we need to

  • legalize prostitution,
  • establish specific legal protections for prostitutes,
  • back those protections up with real court and police support.
As for my personal experiences with porn and prostitution, I'll confess that I've watched porn (the short segments I could watch for free on the net), and have saved some segments of it, though I haven't watched any of it in years. I kind of lost interest after awhile. For a short time I paid to get access to nude photography on the net, quite a few years ago. I don't spend much time looking at nude photography today but I will sometimes save a nude picture I run across if I like it a lot. I've never sought or received the services of a prostitute.

I'm plain old vanilla as far as my tastes are concerned, and wouldn't care for any kind of kinky pornography, but I guess I have no objections to those who do like it, as long as the porn they watch is filmed in an atmosphere of total all-around consent. I'm not an expert about what's really going on out there in the porn industry but it does seem apparent to me that there are some serious problems there.

I have heard about porn addiction in adult and (perhaps especially) teen males, and how it is damaging their real-life sex lives and their abilities to relate to, and interact with, women, as well as how it's damaging their lives in general. I'm concerned about that and I hope there will be an increasing momentum behind the movement to break such addictions.

I guess that covers the main gist of my experience and perspective.
