Dating vs. Poly

One possibility I see is that a new term has appeared that seems to be a better fit for where people are wanting their love style to go.

Exactly! As a 29 y/o, I've never dated around and have identified as poly since about 22. With the exception of my swinging encounters(which I would argue also required significant ground work and communication), I have led a very monogamous life thus far. But, that doesn't change the fact that I still identify as polyamorous. It was one of the first discussions I had with my now-husband. It's what feels natural to me and I would honestly be remiss to not communicate that at the start of any relationship.

Perhaps because I am so close to a new decade :D (I'm probably more Generation X than Generation Next), I don't know many people who identify as poly as a way of describing their dating style/casual sex. All my geezer friends still describe that as "playing the field". :p I consider "playing the field" and "polyamory" two distinctly different things.
