Another cost-saving thing to do, if you live near a city or town that has lots of activities or arts organizations is to get on all the email lists for things you enjoy doing, either from the organizations themselves or meetup.com. For example, I love seeing dance performances and often get announcements about upcoming performances. Dance is much more affordable than seeing a play, usually. With some orchestras, you can see rehearsals for free, there are all kinds of ways to get discounted tickets. And some groups are subsidized and offer free performances. Recently, I received an email from one of the meetup groups I belong to and learned about a Flamenco dance company that is on tour and putting on free dance concerts throughout NYC. An evening at a lovely theater, seeing dance, for nothing (except the subwayfare to get there)!
