A writer Cameron is not. An excellent filmmaker, yes, but if he hadn't intended Avatar to stand alone, it should have been much more obvious on either end of the story. As it was, he tied up all the loose ends in a way that didn't really leave room for either a sequel or a prequel. It had the structure of a one-off.

Without spoiling it, I will say all of the questions you ask were answered to my satisfaction, at least.
