The best advice I can give is in two parts - first, try to get to know local poly folk - the best way to do that is to join a local poly group that has regular social get-togethers; second, don't approach every poly person as a potential date - get to know folks as friends in a more relaxed way - see what develops. Worst case, you end up with more friends.
