Legal links?
Has anyone compiled a list of links or summary of the various laws on bigamy and adultery etc in the various states, either here or elsewhere?
I've gotten interested after reading that in Ohio, marrying someone else, while married, or COHABITING with someone else while married, is a misdemeanor of the 1st degree, with jail not to exceed 6 months and fine not to exceed $1000. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/2919.01 Yikes! I'm pretty sure they don't enforce it most of the time, but still. It's on the books. It also makes me wonder what they do if all parties involved cohabit in the same home. Hmmm. |
If you are good at interpreting legal language, that would be a great page to put together. You could start a thread in the Golden Nuggets forum and add to it as you find them. I started a thread there of blogs by our members here and that was fun to put together. Or you could put up a page somewhere on the web and link to it.
I nominate you to get the ball rolling on legal links! :) There are also some organizations related to legal issues for poly peeps and alternative lifestyles: Sexual Freedom Legal Defense and Education Fund National Coalition for Sexual Freedom's Incident Reporting & Response Polyamory Society Legal Affairs Division |
I think that a resource like that could be very useful as a reference!
[EDIT TO ADD:] Just found this: http://fightbigamy.typepad.com/my_we..._state_la.html and here is some stuff on Common-law marriage: http://www.ncsl.org/issues-research/...-marriage.aspx |
Found this blog that has a summary of the relevant laws for each state relating to non-monogamy (with references):
http://non-monodiscourse.blogspot.co...aw-part-1.html Also a lot of other relevant info. |
Nice. I was just thinking I ought to start looking into this, and here you all have found a bunch of interesting links already. :) I'll have to go read them.
I also found this: http://practical-polyamory.blogspot....my-united.html while reading other things about polyamory. So we may be covered. :) |
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have self-uniting marriages. In my wildest dreams, I see making a case in Pennsylvania for a plural marriage via self-uniting marriages....
